The relation with pressure and the amount of CO2 that will be mixed with your liquid is very important especially with force carbonation. You will know the amount of CO2 that is in your liquid by measuring the partial pressure of that liquid in the surrounding or inside the container of your liquid. This is done by using a regulator that measures this pressure in psi. Psi stands for pounds per square inch.
The pressure required to get a certain amount of CO2 to carbonate your liquid varies depending on different factors such as volume and of course, the temperature of the liquid. In order to get a faster carbonation then use liquid that is very cold or almost at its freezing temperature. Also, to speed up the carbonation process you can also try and aggravate the liquid or shake it every now and then to speed up the mix of the gas and liquid in the tank or container you are using.
Pressure relation to the amount of CO2 should be appropriate and there are online calculators that will help you out. It is recommended that you start off at low pressure when you turn on your tank, say start at 10 psi and work your way up until you reach the desired pressure for your carbonation. It is recommended that you don’t go over 60psi. But other claims it would be faster if your pressure is higher than 60 but for safety. Don’t go over the 60psi if you are carbonating soda.
Force carbonation is not going to be instant as well. Though force carbonation would make carbonation process much faster, you still need to give it a few days to complete the carbonation process especially for beer. You can leave the container for 1 week before you enjoy them with the carbonation process done right and complete. Others prefer to carbonate and use the carbonated drink straight away. You can do that for sodas and there are companies with their own carbonation setup that lets you drink your soda instantly. But for home brewers making their own beer, let it settle first for a few days before you open your beer bottles or keg.
Whatever type of liquid you want can be used for carbonation. In fact, having a carbonation setup at home can be a lot of fun. Give it a try on different types of sodas that you can chill and drink. Try a carbonated cold coffee or carbonated chocolate drink. Might seem a bit weird but many are giving these things a try just for fun. Any liquid beverage can be carbonated. You can even carbonate water and use it for your cocktail drinks. Carbonated water is called as club soda. You can use it for all sorts of cocktails and give it an extra refreshing touch.
Force carbonation is a preferred method for sodas because natural carbonation can leave additional flavor because of the yeast while force carbonation won’t have any of those disadvantages but would cost a bit more than with natural carbonation. It’s fun to force carbonate but never forget you are dealing with a pressured container so always remember your safety.
